YAKISIME is Old Style Japanease Traditional Pottery.
Unglazed erthenwere “yakisime”is fired in the most primitive type of kiln called
ana-gama(literally“cave-kiln”).The firing at a high temperature gose on for as long as
a week, at the end of one firing, we usually end up having used well over two thousand
bundles of firewood such as nara and kunugi(both of the oak family). Ashes in the kiln
fall on a vessel, on the surface of which they melt and form an unpredictable natural
glaze. Thus, a particular combination of ashes and flame create a different pattern, or
what we call “scene” on the surface, each time.
